What’s On!

All lectures will be held in the Auditorium of Mareel - Shetland’s Cinema and Music Venue adjacent to the Shetland Museum & Archives.

The Congress programme will include a number of site visits including Old Scatness (the best-preserved Iron Age Village in Northern Europe which was excavated over 12 years to the latest standards) and Jarlshof (world famous multi-period site which has a stunning Viking village).  Visits will also be made to the lawting site at Tingwall, Scalloway Castle and Catpund Soapstone Quarries.  There will also be an optional evening site visit to the island of Mousa, where you will see the best-preserved Broch in the world, on the evening of Monday 5th August at the cost of £20 per head.

It is worth noting that taken together, Mousa, Jarlshof and Old Scatness are on the tentative list for World Heritage Status.

“Fiddle Frenzy”,a local music festival, will be held at the same time as the Congress http://www.shetlandarts.org/whats-on/festivals/fiddle-frenzy/.  This will include evening concerts by local, national and international artists, including the world-renowned Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham.  These concerts will also be held at Mareel and would give delegates a chance to experience some local culture.

The concert organisers have reserved a limited number of tickets for the Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham concert (being held on the evening of Monday 5th August) and you are asked to indicate on the booking form if you wish to attend.  The tickets will cost in the region of £15-£20 per ticket and the price will be confirmed before you are charged.  Again, these will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Please note that there is a choice of 2 optional extras on the evening of Monday 5th August.  It will not be possible to do both.
